Plan your trip
Overview
While we enjoy amazing world-class foiling conditions all year-round, here’s a general overview of each month to help you plan your next trip with us.
DECEMBER 1ST - MARCH 15TH
Dry season with consistent sunny weather, a smaller wave average size and gorgeous blue waters. We also get the occasional flat spell during this time.
This is a great period for riders seeking reliable clean and pretty conditions, though not ideal for big wave riders looking for big surf necessarily, with the exception of the less predictable and less frequent north swells.
North swells: these swells during this period can and do bring larger waves with spectacular conditions for the foil, including but not limited to big surf.
Vacation mode: if you ever wish on integrating friends and/or family with you on a trip, this is probably the best time for that, as this period enhances a general vacation experience by having consistent sunny days and beautiful ocean conditions. We provide a wide variety of accomodation options in our price list.
FEBRUARY:
This is the windiest month of the year, with strong offshore winds in a lot of the coast. Seasonal gusty days can prevent our tours from departure. All other regular days usually have small, but super clean and gorgeous conditions for the foil.
MARCH 15TH - AUGUST 31ST
This is the Peak season for tow foiling and also the rainy season. With consistent south swells and glassy mornings, this period is ideal, but not limited to riders seeking to foil on bigger, more powerful waves. For beginners, the big days also offer many other spots that are perfect for beginner foilers with less experience.
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER
Good swell continues, but these are the rainiest months of the rainy season. Seasonal storms can and do bring rough conditions and murky waters, though most regular days offer some of the glassiest and cleanest sessions of the entire year.
NOVEMBER:
A top month for tow foiling— dominant good weather makes it an excellent time for a trip. This is a gorgeous month to visit Costa Rica in general.
The Range
The unique qualities of foil technology offer a massive boost in scoring potential VS traditional surfboards. When it comes to wave riding on a regular surfboard for example, your best sessions of the year, on a scale of 1 to 10, can be spaced far apart—sometimes too far. With a foil, the difference is night and day. The opportunity to score high on the scale is vastly more frequent, and you rarely dip into the lower range.
The Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica is consistently active and beautiful year-round. The days when you score a session that leaves you completely exhausted and happy—no matter your skill level—are thankfully common.
For new foilers, when the waves are big and intimidating, there are always plenty of new sections and breaks that are very forgiving and user-friendly.
Experienced riders looking to push their limits, will have ample opportunity to dig deep and unleash towards full potential.
Foiling is very generous, like a fruit tree that keeps on giving more fruit.
Someone famous once said: "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."

Travel insurance
Anyone who has gone through the process of learning how to foil, understands that foiling is a dangerous endeavour. Personal experience and the sharp edge on your carbon fiber blade are loyal testimony and evidence to this fact. We kindly require all of us guests to have travel insurance in order to ride with us.
Tamarindo has several emergency services within short range, which we hope you never have to use. But better safe than sorry.
Cancellations Policy
Our expeditions are conducted entirely in the ocean, on jet skis and boats. Navigating the open ocean means our expeditions are subject to the elements, and cancellations may occur if conditions compromise anyone's safety. Here are our policies regarding this scenario:
- If we can not depart due to bad weather (rain, thunder or powerful winds), any funds collected for that day will be returned in full. We will happily move the reservation to the closest and best available date.
- If an expedition has to end due to the elements, after we leave, half of the cost will be kept as payment if we go over 2 hours. The rest of the funds will be returned in full.
Contingency plan
We have created an alliance with our good friend and living Legend Don Long, of Tow Foil CostaRica. Tow Foil Costa Rica is based out the Jaco/Esterillos area, in the Central Pacific side of Costa Rica. This is about 4 hours south of Tamarindo and also has:
- World class waves for tow foiling.
- No crowds.
- The right team to get you there.
In the case scenario that we see a potential cancellation on our weather charts before it happens, we will immediately notify you as our clients of such potential and offer you the option of moving your operation due south and ride with our friends in Esterillos instead of with us.
Since Esterillos has very different weather patterns than Tamarindo, it is very possible that while you could not ride with us up north on a specific trip, due to safety concerns produced by the elements, you can still adjust accordingly and score down south with Don, so you continue to take full use of your planning and hard work. This is an option available that can add an extra layer of security and scoring potential to your trip to Costa Rica. Scoring insurance if you will.
In this case scenario and with your acceptance, we will refund your expedition funds in full and we will arrange swift communication and a smooth transfer. When this happens, there will be no economic or policy participation of any sort on our end, but will gladly provide further assistance and guidance as needed.
Don has earned our love, admiration and respect in the water doing things Legends do when no one is watching. Please go and check him out!
